AfriHealth Metrics™ – hiring Adhoc Assessor — Medical Laboratory Scientist

About AfriHealth Metrics™
AfriHealth Metrics™ is an independent healthcare performance intelligence organisation building Africa’s first standardised system for assessing, measuring and benchmarking healthcare facilities across the continent. Our flagship methodology, the Facility Readiness and Performance Index™ (FRPI™), evaluates facilities across 120 indicators spanning 10 performance domains, producing composite scores and facility-level assessments that are comparable across facility types, ownership models and geographic contexts, from primary health centres in Kibera, Kenya to tertiary private hospitals in Lagos, Nigeria. We serve governments that need evidence to plan and invest, health insurers building credible provider networks, development partners and investors seeking independent verification of facility readiness, and the healthcare providers themselves, who deserve a clear, external measure of where they stand and a precise path toward improvement. We are not measuring African healthcare through a borrowed lens. We are building the tools this continent deserves from the ground up.
Job Title: Adhoc Assessor — Medical Laboratory Scientist
Location: Lagos ,Ekiti,FCT Abuja, Niger, Zamfara, Sokoto ,Kebbi, Jigawa, Bauchi, Adamawa, Enugu, Rivers.
The FRPI™ assesses healthcare facilities across six instrument types covering Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary facilities in both the public and private sectors. Assessments are conducted by trained, multi-professional teams whose combined expertise covers every domain of the framework, from clinical services and pharmacy management to laboratory quality, biomedical equipment, and health data systems.
The Medical Laboratory Scientist Assessor is the diagnostics and laboratory quality specialist of the FRPI™ assessment team. You will evaluate laboratory services, equipment functionality, biosafety standards, and quality assurance systems across the facility. Laboratory quality is a critical determinant of diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes, yet it remains one of the most consistently under-evaluated domains in Nigerian healthcare.
As an FRPI™ Medical Laboratory Scientist Assessor, you will evaluate the following areas during facility visits. Specific assessment items vary by facility type (Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary) and ownership (public or private).
- Assess laboratory service availability and scope against the facility’s service mandate, verifying that essential diagnostic tests are offered, equipment is functional, results are reliable, and services are accessible to clinical teams within acceptable turnaround times.
- Evaluate laboratory equipment functionality, calibration records, and preventive maintenance schedules for all key diagnostic and analytical instruments, verified by direct inspection and documentary evidence.
- Assess reagent and consumable management, including availability against the facility’s test menu, storage conditions, expiry date compliance, and inventory control systems.
- Review sample collection, processing, transport, and storage protocols, verifying that pre-analytical standards are maintained across all sample types and that chain of custody is properly documented.
- Evaluate laboratory quality assurance systems, including internal quality control practices, participation in external quality assessment programmes, result verification processes, and corrective action records.
- Assess biosafety standards across the laboratory, including personal protective equipment availability and use, sharps and hazardous waste management, spill response protocols, and laboratory biosafety committee functionality.
- Review laboratory documentation and reporting systems, including test request and result registers, critical value notification procedures, turnaround time records, and the accuracy and completeness of reporting to clinical teams.
- Lead documentation of the laboratory and diagnostics domain during facility assessments, ensuring all findings are accurately recorded on the assessment instrument, photographic evidence is captured, and any critical quality or safety gaps are escalated appropriately during the team debrief.
