Job Type : Fixed Term Contract Starting With 6 Months /level 9)

Main Purpose:

Implement gynaecological and obstetrician procedures, performing any other prior treatment required, during or

immediately after a woman has given birth in order to improve women’s reproductive health and to reduce pregnancy,

delivery and neonatology risks. This will be done in accordance with MSF policies, protocols and universal hygiene

standards and in multidisciplinary collaboration with other medical doctors and midwife services

Job Description

  •  Provide health care related to gynaecology and obstetrics to patients, including prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
  •  Ensure the implementation of MSF clinical policies, tools, guidelines and protocols related to gynaecology and obstetrics in order to minimize clinical risk and to extend best reproductive practices.
  •  In collaboration with other medical colleagues, carry out the collection of quantitative gynaecological data and ensure exhaustive use of management tools in order to improve gynaecological results and to share knowledge among other field specialists.
  •  Plan and supervise the HR associated processes (recruitment, training, performance evaluation, development and internal/external communication) of the gynaecological staff in order to ensure both an efficient sizing and the amount of knowledge required, to improve people’s capabilities and their active participation in influencing the  targeted population using preventive practices. This will be done in close coordination with the HR department.
  • Supervise the maintenance and running of the gynaecological equipment and drug consumption, preparing new orders when required and ensuring its rational use as well as that pharmacy stock levels are permanently updated and available. MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

Zurmi General Hospital (ZGH) is an MSF-supported secondary-level facility in Zamfara State, Nigeria, providing Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) to a high-volume, high-acuity patient population.

The Obstetrician-Gynaecologist serves as the senior clinical lead for the maternity unit and acts as technical focal point for all Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) activities.

Clinical Care and CEmONC Activities

  • Lead daily multidisciplinary clinical rounds in the prenatal and postnatal wards, in collaboration with midwives,medical doctors, and SRH supervisors and managers, ensuring continuity of care and timely clinical decisionmaking.
  • Perform caesarean sections and other surgical obstetric interventions for patients meeting established clinical criteria, ensuring safe surgical practice and appropriate post-operative management.
  •  Oversee the systematic use of the partograph for labour monitoring across the maternity unit, promoting early
    identification of prolonged or obstructed labour to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes and reduce birth
    asphyxia.
  • Provide clinical oversight for the management of high-risk pregnancies, including pre-eclampsia/eclampsia,
    antepartum and postpartum haemorrhage, sepsis, and other obstetric emergencies in line with CEmONC signal
    functions.
  •  Supervise and support newborn resuscitation at delivery and liaise with neonatology and nutrition teams to
    ensure integrated management of neonates requiring special care.

Quality of Care and Protocols

  •  Ensure strict adherence to MSF and national maternal health protocols across all clinical areas, including triage, active management of third-stage labour, and management of obstetric complications.
  •  Lead maternal death reviews and near-miss audits, identifying gaps in care and implementing corrective actions to improve outcomes for mothers and newborns.
  •  Promote evidence-based clinical practice and rational use of blood products, antibiotics, and oxytocic’s, monitoring consumption patterns and flagging concerns to the pharmacy and medical management teams.
  •  Monitor and contribute to the improvement of key maternal and neonatal indicators (caesarean section rate, stillbirth rate, case fatality rate, Apgar scores), and report findings through the project’s medical reporting mechanisms (SitReps and Punto info).
  •  Participate in multidisciplinary clinical meetings, mortality reviews, and quality-of-care discussions; support integration of maternity, neonatology, nutrition, mental health, and emergency services to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Capacity Building and Training

  •  Lead structured capacity-building activities for medical doctors and midwives, including bedside teaching, skillsand-drills sessions, and case-based learning, with particular focus on obstetric emergencies (haemorrhage,eclampsia, obstructed labour, sepsis, and neonatal resuscitation).
  •  Conduct regular competency assessments of clinical staff and identify individual training needs; coordinate with the SRH supervisor/manager to plan and document training activities.
  •  Support the integration of partograph use, triage protocols, and obstetric emergency drills into routine practice, fostering a culture of continuous learning and clinical improvement within the maternity team.

Coordination and Partnerships

  •  Collaborate closely with Ministry of Health (MOH) counterparts and maternity leadership at Zurmi General Hospital, supporting ownership and alignment between MSF and national maternal health priorities.
  •  Act as technical focal point for SRH activities, providing clinical guidance on family planning, post-abortion care, and management of gender-based violence cases in coordination with the mental health and social work teams.
  •  Strengthen referral pathways for obstetric and neonatal emergencies within Zurmi General Hospital and to higher-level facilities when required, ensuring timely and appropriate transfers with adequate clinical handover.
  •  Contribute to community engagement and health promotion efforts in coordination with outreach teams, addressing barriers to facility delivery and antenatal care attendance in the catchment population.

Requirements:

Education

• Essential, Gynaecology specialist diploma

Experience

• Essential at least 2-year certified work experience in Gynaecology

• Desirable previous experience with MSF or other NGO’s in developing countries

Languages

• Essential mission language: local working language would be an asset.

Knowledge

• Essential computer literacy (word, excel)
