The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is offering a home-based Research and Knowledge Management Internship in Nature, Climate, and Energy under the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS). This 3-month internship provides an excellent opportunity for students and recent graduates to contribute to sustainable development, climate action, and energy policy initiatives while gaining hands-on experience with a leading international organization.

Background & Job Description

UNDP’s Sustainable Energy Hub (SEH) amplifies the impact of UNDP’s global energy portfolio, supporting the just energy transition, climate action, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Research and Knowledge Management Intern will support cross-cutting research, content curation, knowledge management, and data organization, ensuring that information is structured, accessible, and actionable for teams across UNDP and its partners.

The intern will report to the Director of the UNDP Sustainable Energy Hub and work remotely, contributing to research, knowledge synthesis, digital platform management, and communications.

Internship Details

  • Location: Home-based (remote)
  • Duration: 3 months
  • Schedule: Full-time
  • Stipend: Available for remote interns not financially supported by a university or institution. Prorated for part-time arrangements.
  • Leave: 1.5 days/month (pro-rated for part-time)
  • Insurance: Interns must secure their own medical insurance; UNDP does not reimburse these costs.

 

Key Responsibilities

1. Research & Knowledge Synthesis

  • Conduct literature reviews and comparative analyses on sustainable development, climate, and energy policy.
  • Summarize findings from UNDP reports, country documents, and partner studies.
  • Assist in preparing briefs, background papers, and talking points.

2. Knowledge Management & Data Organization

  • Curate and structure SEH knowledge products, case studies, tools, and lessons learned.
  • Maintain digital platforms such as knowledge hubs, intranet pages, or shared databases.
  • Support metadata documentation and data integration into dashboards and indices.

3.Communications & Storytelling

  • Draft policy notes, blogs, or knowledge spotlights for internal and external audiences.
  • Prepare content for presentations, newsletters, and global events.
  • Support data visualization and infographic development.

4. Data & Digital Management

  • Organize and catalogue datasets, indicators, and geospatial or socio-economic data.
  • Assist in cleaning, synthesizing, and visualizing data for digital knowledge products.

Qualification

Education:

  • Enrolled in a postgraduate degree (Master’s or higher) or in the final year of an undergraduate degree in International Development, Sustainable Energy, Climate Policy, Economics, Political Science, Environmental Studies, or related fields.
  • Recent graduates within one year of graduation may also apply.

Experience & Skills:

  • Research and writing experience (academic, policy, or advocacy).
  • Familiarity with sustainable development, climate, or energy topics.
  • Knowledge management, content curation, or database experience is desirable.
  • Data literacy and ability to visualize and synthesize data using tools like Excel, Python, or similar.
  • Strong communication, organization, and reporting skills.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of other UN languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese) is an asset.
