  • The BBC Media Action office in Nigeria is looking for a Senior Research Officer- Data Management to support the timely and efficient implementation of all aspects of research for a BBC Media Action reproductive health project in northern Nigeria, working closely with the Research and Data Manager and Senior Research Officer- Digital.
  • The role will report directly to Head of Research and Learning, whilst working day to day with the Research and Data Manager and Senior Research Officer- Digital. The position is based in Abuja and will require travel to other states within the country.

Main Duties and responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day management of research agency and freelance researchers, including
  • overseeing data collection and management, and other deliverables.
  • Lead day-to-day data cleaning and analysis of weekly quantitative audience tracking survey data.
  • Manage data input into the dashboard, adapting it to stakeholder needs, supporting others to use it and generating visualisations from it.
  • Support the design and implementation of qualitative research to help inform project strategic reviews and decision-making.
  • Work with the Research & Data Manager and Senior Research Officer- Digital on insight generation (from all aspects of research for the project) and communication to stakeholders, including supporting monthly and quarterly learning review sessions, and ad hoc datan requests/deliverables.
  • Support/contribute to communicating complex research clearly to diverse audiences, including the Gates Foundation leadership, non-research staff, donors, and media partners. This includes preparing and presenting research presentations and insights that inform the production process, partner outreach activities and feedback to Gates Foundation.
  • Seek technical research assistance from the Cross-Country Team where required to support delivery and communication of research.
  • Work closely with the Head of Research and Learning, the Research and Data Manager and other relevant teams to ensure that all research activities are designed and communicated with safeguarding in mind, and that research design documents and tools reflect this.
  • Participate in relevant mandatory training on Safeguarding and Respect at Work, and apply it across all aspects of work.

Required Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • The Senior Research Officer-Data Management will be an experienced researcher with demonstrable research design, implementation, data management, analysis and reporting skills.
  • Strong demonstrable skills in conducting quantitative research, including quantitative survey data management and analysis for development projects or similar experience in conducting social/market research in any research agency and/or media and communication research.
  • Ability to plan, design, implement and manage mixed-methods research.
  • Proven experience evaluating social impact interventions using a range of methods, adapting to challenging and resource-constrained conditions, with strong experience in undertaking or managing fieldwork, including in rural and geographically challenging areas
  • Experience of writing precise and clear reports and briefing documents, with good communication skills, being able to clearly communicate research findings and what these insights mean for the users of the data.
  • Good knowledge of family planning, especially for the northern Nigeria context.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the importance of and application of ethical and safeguarding procedures in research.
  • Demonstrable understanding of cultural diversity and cross-cultural research within Nigeria.
  • A good grasp of, or enthusiasm to learn about, communication strategies and development issues.
  • Good IT and data dashboard management skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and data analysis software such as SPSS, Atlas.ti, NVivo etc.
  • Ability to work closely with non-research teams in applying research findings to media outputs.
  • Ability to speak and write Hausa is highly desired.
  • Previous research experience working with NGOs or development projects would be an advantage.
