MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Perform clinical laboratory activities according to MSF protocols, security and hygiene measures to obtain results to determine the patient’s treatment.

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES

• According to medical prescription, preparing and performing clinical exams/tests with appropriate techniques and following MSF protocols and procedures. This function includes, among others:
• Taking blood, vaginal and urethral
• Centrifuging blood and urine
• Performing laboratory exams (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology or parasitological, according to the context of the mission).
• Ensuring proper reporting and registration of the sample results to keep a written track of activity and give information to the relevant persons, ensuring confidentiality.
• Taking care, managing and organize efficiently the laboratory material/equipment:
• Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alerting the supervisor in case of malfunction
• Applying hygiene and safety protocols, doing daily cleaning /maintenance, sterilization, washing general glassware after procedures are done.
• Ensuring proper sample waste disposal according to MSF protocols and highest safety
• Supplying orders, doing stock, storage conditions follow-up, keep
• Keeping organized the data collection system of laboratory results and all information generated from the analysis done organized.
• Reporting all relevant information linked to the activity in the laboratory to the line manager, especially the loss/robbery/damage of laboratory equipment or medicines.
• Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment following the user manual and protocols. Alerting the supervisor in case of malfunction of any device.

Context Specific Accountabilities:

The Lab Technician will be responsible for performing microbiological testing on clinical specimens to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases. The technician ensures that laboratory procedures are conducted according to standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality management systems, biosafety, and infection prevention and control (IPC) standards while maintaining accurate documentation and timely reporting of results. The responsibilities of the LT include:

General responsibilities:

• Receive, register, and process clinical specimens according to established laboratory
• Perform microscopy, culture, identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing on bacterial, fungal, and other relevant microorganisms.
• Prepare culture media, reagents, stains, and quality control
• Interpret microbiological findings within the scope of practice and report results
• Perform Gram staining and other routine microbiological staining
• Maintain specimen integrity and ensure proper storage of Isolates and disposal of
• Interpret the expert rules set by EUCAST and ensure all the results are entered in WHONET for sharing with the medical team by the Supervisor or Manager.

Quality Assurance

• Adhere to laboratory quality management systems and standard operating
• Perform and document daily internal quality control and participate in external quality assessment (EQA)
• Ensure accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of laboratory

Biosafety and Infection Prevention

• Follow biosafety guidelines when handling infectious
• Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Decontaminate work surfaces and equipment according to IPC
• Segregate and dispose of laboratory waste

Equipment Management

• Operate, clean, maintain, and troubleshoot microbiology laboratory
• Monitor incubators, refrigerators, freezers, autoclaves, biosafety cabinets, and other laboratory instruments’ temperature, ensuring temperatures are within the expected range.
• Report equipment faults and coordinate preventive

Inventory Management

• Monitor laboratory stock levels of reagents, media, consumables, and

• Ensure proper screening of blood for transfusion and compatibility testing before blood delivery to the
• Ensure the availability of blood in the bank, keeping track of blood in the bank, and ensuring proper maintenance of the blood bank.
• Ensure a proper blood banking system; and adequate arrangement for blood in the
• Ensurie blood is issued in the correct order based on expiry date and proper disposal of expired blood according to IPC and WATSAN Policy.
• Perform clinical chemistry analysis for patient sample, understand interpretation of IQC and EQAS and transferring the knowledge in interpreting patient result.
• Use the knowledge of IQC and EQAS to interpret when the analyzer is malfunctioning for immediate upport from the Biomed.
• Perform other laboratory analyses as the program changes and any other task that might be delegated by the Supervisor or Manager.
