ALIMA IN NIGERIA

ALIMA (The Alliance for International Medical Action) has been active in Nigeria since 2016, with interventions guided by a regional strategy addressing health and nutrition emergencies, maternal-infant care, and epidemic response. The organization operates across several states: North-East: Borno (MMC and Jere LGAs) and Yobe (Bade and Karasuwa LGAs) North-West: Katsina (Kaita, Batagarawa, and Katsina LGAs) South-West: Ondo (Owo LGA) ALIMA’s integrated programs combine medical care, nutrition, maternal health, mental health, and epidemic response, alongside operational research to enhance health outcomes for vulnerable populations—particularly internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities.

Since May 2021, ALIMA (The Alliance for International Medical Action) has been operating in Yobe State, North-East Nigeria, providing lifesaving health and nutrition services to communities affected by conflict, displacement, and food insecurity. Yobe remains a central component of ALIMA’s humanitarian strategy in the BAY states (Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe), with activities designed to strengthen access to quality care, prevent malnutrition, and build resilience among vulnerable populations.

MISSION ET OBJECTIVES

The Medical Referent of the ALIMA Yobe  Project is the ALIMA representative and responsible for the implementation of program/medical activities in all supported LGAs.

In close collaboration with the Project Coordinator, Medical Coordinator, and Mission Coordination team, define and plan the project objectives and priorities, the risks and constraints and calculating human and financial needs.

Cultivate the relationship with the MoH stakeholders in order to implement efficiently and ensure the goals as well as to improve targeted population’s health conditions and humanitarian situation.

TASKS & RESPONSABILITIES

  • Ensure that ALIMA’s charter, policies, and image are respected in all Yobe  program activities, particularly in relation to national employees, populations, authorities, and partners.

  • With the support of the Project Coordinator (PC), steer and supervise the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the project in collaboration with the project team and according to internal and donor indicators to assess the level of achievement of the project objectives.

  • Provide technical support to medical personnel in the field, ensuring that all ALIMA medical activities are implemented in accordance with relevant policies, protocols, and national guidelines. Directly supervise the Nurse Supervisor, SRH Supervisor, Pharmacy Supervisor, MHPSS psychologists, and medical doctors. Oversee team members’ work for quality and guideline compliance, and assist them when they have questions or problems. Delegate some technical tasks to NAM or MAM or SRH Manager if available.

  • Ensure that skilled, highly motivated, and duly registered (by respective professional regulator bodies) health staff are provided to the project to support staff. Maintain the quality of recruitment processes, follow-up, and coaching of staff.

  • Manage the project pharmacy to ensure efficiency and validate medical orders to the central pharmacy for project activities. Monitor consumption and liaise with medical coordination regarding needs to avoid stock-outs in the consumption unit. Support the pharmacy supervisor on medical item supply.

  • Compile and analyze medical/program data for reports (medical sitrep) to the medical coordination and project coordinator on project evolution. Propose corrections if needed.

  • Ensure a high-quality data collection and epidemiological surveillance system, in agreement with medical coordination, to define medical and technical programs and preventive protocols for the targeted population. Participate in the management of epidemics, disasters, etc., in conjunction with the Ministry of Health (MOH).

  • Supervise the full implementation of safety and health protocols, reporting to the Medical Coordination and Project Coordinator on risky behaviours to ensure safe working conditions for project staff. Implement the health policy for national staff; provide all prophylactic and preventive necessary measures, structures, and emergency plans; manage any medical evacuation to ensure ALIMA staff health.

  • Provide inputs on budget processes, work plan, procurement plan, and participate in monitoring budget consumption to ensure operational effectiveness and efficiency. Supervise all orders (medical and logistical) for program implementation at the project level with the support of the project team, and collaborate with coordination team and project team for international and national medical orders.

  • Participate in various partner meetings for smooth project implementation: LGA health and Nutrition sector meetings, technical meetings, partner coordination meetings, etc., to maintain effective collaboration with different stakeholders and improve project implementation.

  • Ensure excellent communication and effective working relationships are maintained within the project between staff, managers, PC, and mission coordination. Disseminate key messages and guidance to medical staff. Relay relevant information from the field (safety/security incidents, outbreaks, etc.) to the Project Coordinator and Medical Coordination.

  • Participate in different assessments in Yobe state and drafting of proposals with collaboration from the PC. Participate in opening new medical activities in different LGAs.

  • Contribute to operation and running of research projects where appropriate by providing clinical advice on research projects’ relevance and attending research team meetings.

  • Perform any other duties assigned by the organization through the Head of Medical Department or Project Coordinator.

QUALIFICATION EXPERIENCES & SKILLS

    • Essential Medical degree

    • MBBS

    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in medical practice and humanitarian context

    • Experience in community activities

    • Previous experience with ALIMA or other NGOs in developing countries is desirable in Nutrition and health programs

    • Experience in management of outbreaks such as cholera, measles ,… is an asset

    Required Skills

    • Advanced knowledge in medical management

    • Essential computer literacy (Excel, Word, Outlook and Internet)

    • Training skills

    • Well organized with good negotiation and communication skill

    • Ability to work as part of a team, a part of multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team, in emergency and under pressure, to manage stress easily and result oriented

    • Ability to work in close collaboration with MOH staff

    • Can work and create teamwork, flexible, and committed to the assigned position

    • Interest in and commitment to ALIMA’s activities, enthusiasm to represent the organization to others, to travel to different regions of Nigeria

Languages:

  • English compulsory

  • Others are an asset like Hausa, Kanuri
