Global Rights is an international human rights capacity-building non-governmental organization (NGO). Global Rights was founded in Washington DC, USA in 1978 with the name International Human Rights Law Group and changed its name to Global Rights: Partners for Justice in 2003 at its 25th anniversary.

Position: Police Duty Solicitor

Based: Kaduna, Kano and Sokoto Nigeria

Reports to: Program Manager

Duration of Engagement: August 2025 to March 2026 (8 months)

1. Kawo community (Nassarawa LGA)
2. Kofar Gabas community (Tofa LGA)
3. Sabon Gari community (Wudil LGA)

Sokoto State
1. Shuni District, Dange Shuni LGA (Sokoto South Senatorial District)
2. Chimola District, Gwadabawa LGA (Sokoto East Senatorial District)
3. ⁠Gagi District (Sokoto North Senatorial District)
4. ⁠Kware District (Sokoto North Senatorial District)

Kaduna State
1. Rigachikun (Igabi LGA)
2. ⁠Iyan Juma (Zaria LGA)
3. ⁠Zonkwa (Zangon Kataf LGA)

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide free legal advice and support to survivors of SGBV at police stations.
  • Represent clients during police questions, bail hearings, and other relevant legal procedures.
  • Facilitate referrals to courts, Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs), and other justice-related services.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of all legal services and client interactions.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement officers, SARCs, and community response teams to improve survivor outcomes.
  • Participate in trainings related to SGBV, trauma-informed care, legal ethics, and community justice.
  • Prepare and submit timely reports and updates to the project team as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Barrister-at-Law (BL); must be called to the Nigerian Bar.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ post-call experience, preferably in criminal law, human rights law, or legal aid work.
  • Demonstrated experience working with survivors of SGBV or other vulnerable groups is a strong advantage.
  • Strong understanding of Nigerian legal and criminal justice systems, especially as they relate to gender justice.
  • Knowledge of English and Hausa
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
