What Is the Amgen Scholars Program?

The Amgen Scholars Program is a global summer research initiative that gives undergraduates hands-on laboratory experience at leading universities. At NUS, scholars join active research teams, work on a defined project under faculty supervision, and build skills that matter for graduate school applications in the life sciences. It is a strong credential if you plan to pursue a master’s degree, a PhD, or medical school abroad.

What Does the Program Cover?

This is a fully funded summer internship, so most major costs are handled for you:

  • Accommodation: arranged by NUS during the program.
  • Airfare: a flight to Singapore, plus travel from Japan back to your home country after the symposium.
  • Stipend: SGD 6,000 for the 8 weeks, which also covers meals and local transport.
  • Visa: application fees are covered.

For students from lower-income backgrounds, this removes the usual barriers of flights, housing, and student visa costs. Still, check whether you need travel insurance or any personal documents before departure, and confirm with the organizers what is and isn’t included.

Research Areas Available

Scholars are matched with faculty from NUS departments including:

  • Biological Sciences
  • Biochemistry
  • Pharmacology
  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Microbiology and Immunology

These fields suit students interested in biotechnology, drug discovery, immunology, neuroscience, and other biomedical research careers.

The Kyoto Symposium: A Major Highlight

After the internship, scholars travel to Kyoto, Japan, for the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium (2–5 August 2027). There you present your research, meet scholars from other Asian host universities, and network with scientists and mentors. For an undergraduate, presenting at an international symposium is a strong addition to a CV and personal statement.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you generally need to:

  1. Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at a university in Asia.
  2. Have completed at least your first year of undergraduate study.
  3. Have a strong academic record.
  4. Be able to show English proficiency. If your university teaches in English, a letter from the university confirming this is sufficient, so you may not need IELTS or TOEFL.

  • Letters of recommendation
