OceanHub Africa Acceleration Program Cohort 8 Supports Blue Economy Startups

OceanHub Africa has opened applications for Cohort 8 of its Acceleration Program, inviting African startups developing commercially viable solutions that protect the ocean and support the sustainable use of marine resources.

The 2027 programme will support up to 10 revenue-generating businesses working in the Blue Economy. Selected startups will receive nine months of business coaching, technical support, growth planning and investor-readiness assistance, with opportunities to connect with potential funders.

Applications close on December 6, 2026. The programme is free to join and does not take equity in participating businesses, although founders must cover their own travel costs for in-person activities.

What the OceanHub Africa Acceleration Program Offers

The programme focuses on helping established startups strengthen their business models, expand into new markets and prepare for investment.

Selected ventures will receive:

  • One-on-one business coaching: An Entrepreneur in Residence will work with the startup weekly to develop and implement a growth plan.
  • Investor-readiness support: Guidance on financial analysis, fundraising strategy, investor relations and preparing the documents investors expect to review.
  • Business growth support: Assistance with customer acquisition, commercialisation, market expansion and the development of scalable business models.
  • Technical assistance: Support in areas such as software, hardware design, digital systems, Internet of Things (IoT), operational procedures and financial management.
  • Fundraising connections: Introductions to potential investors and consideration for OceanHub Africa’s follow-on capital facilities, subject to separate processes and eligibility.
  • Bootcamp and networking: A one-week in-person bootcamp where founders can learn from other entrepreneurs and pitch to business and Blue Economy stakeholders.
  • Conference exposure: Graduating ventures are guaranteed an opportunity to pitch at a Blue Economy-related conference in Africa.
  • Peer and alumni networks: Access to a cohort of other founders and OceanHub Africa’s wider startup network.

The programme runs mainly online, with an in-person bootcamp planned for April 2027. Participants who complete the programme are expected to graduate in early 2028.

Who Can Apply?

The accelerator targets registered African businesses operating in the Blue Economy or related sectors. Applicants should meet these requirements:

  • An established product or service: The business must have moved beyond the prototype stage and have evidence of customer use, deployments or commercial contracts.
  • Demonstrable revenue: Applicants must show that customers pay for their product or service. Evidence can include invoices, signed contracts, repeat sales or renewals. There is no minimum revenue requirement, and the business does not need to be profitable.
  • A committed founding team: OceanHub Africa typically looks for at least two co-founders with complementary skills and relevant sector or market knowledge. Solo founders may apply if they have a strong executive or management team of more than four people.

  • A clear ocean-impact case: The startup’s core business must intentionally improve ocean outcomes, with credible evidence or metrics showing its impact.
  • Capacity to participate: At least one team member must be available for weekly workshops and coaching, while a founder or executive representative must attend the in-person bootcamp.

OceanHub Africa generally prioritises businesses with paying customers and a clear path to growth. It does not consider pilot projects or letters of intent alone sufficient proof of revenue.

The programme has limited exception places for ventures that are not yet fully commercially validated but demonstrate breakthrough innovation or exceptional ocean impact. These applicants need registered or pending intellectual property and a written plan showing how the business will generate revenue.

Which Businesses Are Eligible?

The programme considers startups across a range of Blue Economy and related sectors, including:

  • Waste management, recycling and circular economy solutions.
  • Climate technology and nature-based solutions.
  • Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.
  • Marine biotechnology and ocean data.
  • Renewable marine energy.
  • Ocean robotics and monitoring technologies.
  • Maritime transport, logistics, boat building and repair.
  • Coastal and ecotourism.
  • Technologies and services that reduce ocean pollution or protect marine habitats.

For example, a Nigerian startup that converts plastic waste into reusable materials, develops technology for sustainable fishing or provides solutions that reduce pollution entering waterways could be relevant if it meets the programme’s commercial and impact requirements.

The key consideration is not simply whether a business operates in an environmental sector. Its product or service must have a credible connection to improving ocean health.

What Documents Are Required?

Applicants should prepare the following materials before completing the application:

  • Company incorporation documents.
  • An investor pitch deck.
  • Financial statements and management accounts, where available.
  • Evidence of commercial activity, such as customer contracts, invoices or records of repeat sales.
  • Impact metrics or other evidence showing the business’s contribution to ocean health.

Applicants who pass the initial screening may be asked to submit a five-minute video pitch based on their pitch deck. The selection process includes eligibility checks, interviews, scoring and a final pitch before a selection committee.

OceanHub Africa plans to shortlist 20 startups before selecting up to 10 businesses for Cohort 8.
