About the Programme

The Epidemiology Fellowship Programme in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) aims to strengthen the skills of young epidemiologists from low- and middle-income countries within the region. This six-month fellowship, with a potential extension, is designed to provide hands-on experience and exposure to outbreak management and health systems within WHO’s technical programs.

Participants will be assigned to WHO country offices in their home countries, working closely with experts to gain real-world insights into public health strategies at national, regional, and global levels.

Programme Objectives

  • Enhance educational experiences of young epidemiologists through practical assignments.
  • Provide exposure to WHO operations under the mentorship of experienced staff.
  • Develop technical and professional skills in outbreak management and public health.

Location: Cairo, Egypt
Contract Type: Fellowship
Duration: 6 months (with a possibility of extension up to 6 months)

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of a WHO technical expert, fellows will:

  • Conduct literature reviews and data collection.
  • Organize, analyze, and interpret health data.
  • Develop tools, policy briefs, and guidance documents.
  • Assist in organizing workshops, conferences, and events.
  • Contribute to ongoing departmental projects and initiatives.

Qualifications

 Education:

  • Postgraduate degree in public health, outbreak management, or epidemiology.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in data analysis and commonly used software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of statistical software like XLStat is a plus.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability skills aligned with WHO’s core competencies.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years in relevant fields, including:
    • Outbreak or health emergency management.
    • Research and report drafting.
    • Field or academic work in health systems or epidemiology.
    • Data visualization and analysis for health system performance.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English (required).
  • Knowledge of French or Arabic is an asset.

Additional Information

  • Eligibility: Open to nationals of EMR member states, including Afghanistan, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Somalia, Syria, Tunisia, and Yemen.
  • Age Limit: Candidates must be under 35 years old.
  • Entitlements: Monthly stipend and official travel to the duty station.
