OPEN CALL – We’re funding ecofeminist action for a healthy & toxic free future

The project Ecofeminists in action for a Healthy and Toxic Free Future is launching its second international grant-programme.

Every day we are exposed to chemicals that harm our health. Even in small doses, these chemicals can accumulate and disrupt our hormone system and cause lasting damage and disease. Currently there is too little done by legislators to protect our health and the environment from harmful chemicals and waste.

WECF has been working for a toxic free future since its creation over 30 years ago, based on the principles formulated at the Earth Summit in Rio 1992: the polluter pays, reversal of the burden of proof, the precautionary principle and the right to public participation and information and access to justice in environmental matters.

As a part of the project ‘Ecofeminists in action for a healthy and toxic free future’, WECF will give out about five grants of up to 15.000 euro before the end of the year. WECF is looking for organisations that are working towards a toxic free future from an ecofeminist perspective. Meaning, organisations taking a holistic approach, recognising that our gender, age, race, sexual identity, education, religion, ability or social economic status impacts our relationship to toxic chemicals and waste.

We are specifically encouraging organisations to apply that are women-led, youth-led, indigenous-led or queer-led.

Proposed activities can include:

  • Capacity building
  • Awareness raising
  • Education
  • Media
  • Policy advocacy
  • Testing of exposure and pollution to chemicals
  • Development of alternative, safer solutions.

Women’s role and leadership and focus on gender-equality and women’s health can be a focus. Also, links can be made to policy processes such as the Global Framework on Chemicals, the Basel Rotterdam and Stockholm and Minamata Conventions, the negotiations of the Plastic Pollution Treaty and national and European chemical and waste regulation.

Selection of grantees will be based on the following criteria:

  • Applicants from WECF ecofeminist network, as well as new organisations are eligible.
  • The project focuses on the topic ‘Toxic Free Future’.
  • The project and organization use a feminist and/or intersectional approach. I.e. integrates the impacts of gender, age, race, sexual identity, education, religion, ability or social economic status.
  • The project activities are not for profit.
  • The project and organization subscribe to WECF’s Theory of Change (above) and code of conduct.
  • A regional balance of the selected projects is taken into account.
  • Previous grantees of WECF Toxic Free Future funding can re-apply, but priority might be given to new applicants.

Projects will be selected by a selection committee and approved by the International Advisory Board. We will review applications on a rolling basis.

Application Deadline: November 1st 2026
