Applications are open for the 2026–2027 Refugee Fellows Program, a global fellowship designed to strengthen advocacy leadership among forcibly displaced individuals working to advance refugee rights and humanitarian solutions worldwide.

Organized by Refugees International, the year-long virtual fellowship supports refugee and displacement leaders whose work contributes to policy influence, community empowerment, and systemic change within the global advocacy landscape.

About the Fellowship

The Refugee Fellows Program is structured to expand the advocacy impact of displaced leaders by providing professional support, strategic mentorship, and institutional affiliation. Fellows collaborate closely with Refugees International staff while advancing their own advocacy priorities through publications, policy engagement, research, and public dialogue.

Participants formally join the organization’s advocacy network and contribute to initiatives that elevate displaced communities’ voices in international decision-making spaces.

Eligible Countries
Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Myanmar, Colombia, Costa Rica, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Iran, Kenya, Mauritania (Climate Displacement), Mexico, Mozambique, Palestine (Gaza & West Bank), Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Uganda, Zambia, and countries hosting Rohingya refugees.

 

Fellowship Duration

1 August 2026 – 30 July 2027
Fully Virtual Programme

Fellows commit up to seven hours per week to fellowship activities.

Priority Advocacy Themes

Applicants working in the following areas are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Women and girls’ protection and empowerment
  • Economic inclusion and labor market access for displaced communities
  • Refugee resettlement and complementary pathways
  • Meaningful refugee participation and power-shifting approaches
  • Climate displacement and adaptation solutions

These focus areas reflect current advocacy priorities and may evolve depending on global humanitarian developments.

During the programme, fellows are expected to:

  • Participate in regular virtual meetings
  • Publish at least one advocacy piece such as a policy brief, report, or op-ed
  • Collaborate on advocacy initiatives and events
  • Conduct a field research activity where feasible
  • Engage in regional or global refugee-focused events
  • Maintain accountability toward agreed fellowship goals

Mid-year performance reviews will assess progress and engagement.

Panel interviews are expected to take place between late May and early July 2026.

  • Fellowship Start Date: 1 August 2026

Selected fellows will receive:

– USD $15,000 fellowship grant, disbursed quarterly

Eligibility Criteria

– Be forcibly displaced leaders or individuals actively engaged in refugee or displacement advocacy

– Be able to commit time to fellowship responsibilities and collaborative work

– Possess independent access to a computer and reliable internet connection

– Hold a bank account capable of receiving international grant payments

– Demonstrate strong advocacy engagement and leadership potential.
