Consultant to Map the Nigerian Impact Investing Market Ecosystem at Impact Investors Foundation (IIF)


Background
Impact investing has emerged as a critical approach to addressing social and environmental challenges while
generating financial returns. In Nigeria, the growing interest in impact investing reflects its potential to
unlock opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), drive inclusive growth, and address pressing
societal challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and climate change. However, the sector remains
underdeveloped, with limited data and insights to guide investors, policymakers, and practitioners.
To address these gaps, this project seeks to map the Nigerian impact investing landscape. This effort will
identify key players, investment flows, and sectoral trends while fostering collaboration with regional GSG
national partners, AVPA and ANDE. The findings will inform market-sizing efforts, cross-border learning,
and improved asset allocation strategies to catalyze investments in SMEs and other high-impact areas.
Objectives
The primary objective of this initiative is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the Nigerian impact
investing ecosystem and facilitate cross-learning within the region. Specifically, the project aims to:
1. Map the Nigerian impact investing market identifying stakeholders, investment activities, and
sectoral focus areas to provide a detailed understanding of the market.
2. Foster regional collaboration and partnership with the GSG Impact national partners (Ghana), AVPA
and ANDE to share methodologies, data, and insights
3. Aggregate and synthesize national findings to size the Nigerian market and benchmark it against
regional peers.
4. Enhance investment strategies and provide actionable insights for optimizing asset allocation and
identifying opportunities for investing in SMEs and other impactful ventures.
5. Promote cross-learning to share data and insights to inform policy, attract investors, and foster
regional collaboration for ecosystem growth.
Scope of Work
The project will include the following activities:
Stakeholder Mapping: Identify and categorize key players, including investors, fund managers,
intermediaries, and policymakers in Nigeria’s impact investing ecosystem.
✓ Data Collection and Analysis: Collect quantitative and qualitative data on investment flows, sectoral
trends, and market gaps.
✓ Regional Collaboration: Engage with GSG national partners, AVPA and ANDE to harmonize
methodologies and facilitate data sharing.
✓ Market Sizing: Analyze data to determine the size and growth potential of the Nigerian impact
investing market.
✓ Reporting and Dissemination: Prepare a comprehensive report, including comparative insights from
regional partners, and disseminate findings through presentations, workshops, and publications.
Deliverables
✓ A detailed evidence-based report on the state of Nigeria’s impact investing ecosystem.
✓ A comprehensive database of stakeholders and organizations in Nigeria including MDAs,
Impact Investment Firms, Policy think tanks, Consultants, Institutes, Industry Leaders and
Uptakers in the impact investing ecosystem. The database will include the name of the
organizations, office address, websites, organizational heads, designation, and contact
information.
✓ A comparative report highlighting Nigeria’s position, best practices, challenges, and
opportunities within the regional impact investing landscape.
✓ Actionable framework and recommendations for policymakers, investors, and practitioners to
drive sectoral growth and scale investments in SMEs and other priority sectors within Nigeria.
✓ Presentations of findings and report summaries in the review and validation workshops, as well
as presentation in the official launch of the reports, online webinars and media briefings.
Implementation Framework and Timeline
The research progresses through various phases, including stakeholder mapping, data analysis, regional
benchmarking, and dissemination. Key milestones include consultations, the release of preliminary findings,
and the final report launch. The final draft of the research is expected to be completed by 30th September
2025.
Professional Qualifications, Expertise and Experience
The desired consultant should have the following qualifications, experience, and competencies:
✓ Proven expertise in impact investing, venture philanthropy, or sustainable finance, particularly in the
context of emerging markets.
✓ A minimum of 7 years of experience conducting market research, ecosystem mapping, or related
projects in the impact investing or development finance sectors.
✓ Track record of successfully managing and delivering similar assignments, including stakeholder
mapping, data collection, and market analysis.
✓ Experience working with regional or international organizations, such as GSG National Advisory Boards, National Partners, AVPA, ANDE or development finance institutions, is highly desirable.
✓ Familiarity with Nigeria’s investment landscape, including SMEs, social enterprises, and regulatory frameworks.
✓ Proficiency in data visualization tools and techniques for presenting insights in compelling and accessible formats.
✓ Excellent report-writing skills, with the ability to deliver high-quality, evidence-based reports
tailored to diverse stakeholders.
✓ Knowledge of benchmarking methodologies and comparative market analysis.
✓ A collaborative and adaptive approach to working with stakeholders across different sectors and
geographies.
✓ Evidence of successfully completed similar assignments, including at least one sample of previous
work.
✓ Contactable references from prior clients or organizations attesting to the consultant’s expertise and
performance.
✓ Availability to commence work immediately upon selection and adhere to the agreed timeline.
✓ Willingness to travel within Nigeria and engage with regional partners if necessary.
