The German Government offers the Wascal Scholarship to eligible African countries in partnership with the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL).

The Wascal Scholarship is a fully funded opportunity to study in West African universities and in Germany. It covers the full university fees, monthly stipends, accommodation, and the costs of flights to and from the countries mentioned above.

Scholarship Details:

The Atlantic Technical University, Cabo Verde, call for application to its second batch to study in the Master Research Programme on Climate Change & Marine Sciences (MRP-CCMS).

Similarly, the Université Joseph KI-ZERBO, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, is pleased to announce the application for its fifth batch of students to the study of Master Research Programme in Informatics for Climate Change (MRP-ICC) in Burkina Faso

The WASCAL Scholarship is open to students from 12 West African countries. This marks another significant step in empowering the next generation of climate leaders across the region.

With the backing of the German Government, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and renowned German universities, these programmes offer exceptional scholarship opportunities for qualified students.

Requirements for German Government WASCAL Scholarship 2026/27

To be considered for the German Government Wascal Scholarship 2026, you must:

  • Be citizen of a WASCAL member country (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo); other ECOWAS member countries may be admitted without scholarship on an availability basis;
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following fields or any other related fields: Biological Sciences, Oceanography, Geography, Sciences of the Atmosphere;
  • Have at least an intermediate level in English language.

The Scholarship includes;

  • monthly stipend to cover accommodation, and living expenses for the period of studies;

Required Documents for Wascal Scholarship 2026/27

To apply, candidates must be ready to submit the following documents;

  • Application Form
  • Academic transcripts
  • Curriculum vitae
  • WASSCE or SSCE Certificate (Anglophone Countries)
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors or researchers (grade associate professor or senior researcher at least).
  • A copy of identity document
  • A copy of Passport Photo Page
  • A letter of motivation (max. 2 pages).
  •  A copy of university degree certificate
  • A certificate copy of proficiency in English or, in alternative, a  statement indicating and
    justifying your self-assessment in the context of English proficiency.
  • Proof of professional experience in relevant area for the course, IF applicable.
  • A written commitment to pay a registration fee of 30 Euro if admitted.
